CASE NAME
Students for Fair Admissions v. The United States Naval Academy et al
Overview
Plaintiff challenged the Naval Academy's race-conscious admissions policy, arguing it is unconstitutional race discrimination, applying the same reasoning as the Supreme Court's decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard (2023).
Details
On December 6, 2024, the court upheld the Naval Academy's race-conscious admissions policy. The court found that the Naval Academy had a compelling national security interest in a diverse officer corps, and that the court should defer to the executive branch with respect to military personnel decisions.
The court observed that the military had made an informed determination that diversity positively impacted unit cohesion and lethality when effectively managed, helped with recruitment and retention of top talent, and bolstered domestic and international legitimacy by representing the nation it defends.
