CASE NAME
Do No Harm v. Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons et al
Overview
Plaintiff challenges a program run by Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS), the U.S. Navy, and the Department of Defense that offers an "immersive experience" at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center or Naval Medical Center San Diego to underrepresented medical students and provides a $12,000 scholarship for travel, housing, and other related costs.
Details
Plaintiff argues that the program discriminates against white men who are not considered underrepresented.
On March 18, 2025, both parties asked the court to put the case on hold so that they could discuss ways to resolve it without burdening the court. The parties requested that the court release Defendant from the obligation to respond to the complaint and permit the parties to file a report in thirty days to inform the court on the status of the case.
On March 26, the court granted part of the motion by dropping the pending deadlines in the case. On May 1, the case was dismissed following a settlement between the parties. As part of the agreement, SOMOS agreed to cancel the program and stated that if it is reinstated in the future, it will be open to students of all races and ethnicities.
